Hi friends, there’s been so much news recently between all that was going on with the government shutdown, Tsunami warnings, constant Trump overload, tech announcements at CES and of course Oscar nominations that I think some really exciting pieces may have slipped through the cracks.
I started this series to highlight some of my favourite things from around the web to make sure you got to read, listen to or see some of the best things from around the web. It’s a vast world of information and content out there and it’s hard to keep up.
If you’re into tech:
I was recently in Las Vegas for CES (which you can read all about here LINK). While the announcements were a bit underwhelming and when people ask me what the coolest thing I saw was, I find myself grasping at straws, there were still some very interesting trends. One of the major ones being ROBOTS that aren’t quite where we hope they are by one of my new favourite writers, Taylor Lorenz.
On that note I think it’s really important for people to be honest about what bots can and can’t do. This is an old article from November but it just came to my attention that SOPHIA the AI robot may not be what she seems.
And Facebook keeps trying to improve the platform but what if it already created the perfect platform? INSTAGRAM.
If you love the Good Place:
One of my favourite shows from last year was the Good Place – NBC’s new comedy starring Ted Danson and Kristen Bell about a fictional afterlife. It is so bright and cheery while also being hilariously dark. GQ interviewed two of the shows new stars JAMEELA JAMIL and WILLIAM JACKSON HARPER.
If you need something fun to listen to:
When Taylor Swift returned to Spotify she brought out a playlist called Taylor Loves which I was obsessed with while I awaited the new album. The follow up PLAYLIST was… if possible even better. I want her to keep making these forever.
In terms of new music releases I’ve just been completely entranced by Camila Cabello’s debut album CAMILA. It is so beautiful and heart wrenching at parts, then triumphant at others. The song Real Friends rips my heart out, it’s a lovely song about loneliness that I think most people will have felt at some point but don’t want to talk about in this age of Instagram and always proving you’re the most popular.
If you’re up for a bit of a read:
Harkening back to the days of when I would write a monthly write up of some of my favourite long form pieces I wanted to highlight these two. The first is a story about someone who keeps a log of missing people across the United States up to date on LONGREADS. There are a lot of cold cases.
And there’s been a lot discussion recently on why kids aren’t watching sports the way they used to. This piece makes an interesting argument that in the age of abundance gambling on SCARCITY can work against these broadcasters.
I have just booked a bunch of trips so I’ve got some really exciting things coming up, along with a new blog series I’m kicking off I can’t wait to share with you so follow along on bloglovin’ so you don’t miss a thing.
