Blogs tend to be a place where people are always sharing the newest thing they bought, what they want to buy next, and so on. But I’m going to shake this up, not that my blog has ever really been about that, because I’m not spending any money until May.
After I talked about my first New Year’s Resolution to spend less time on my phone I wanted to share with you all, my loyal blog readers, one of my other goals for this new year. This one isn’t really about New Year’s but something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile and wouldn’t have worked in the lead up to Christmas.
No Spend 2018
For the next four months I have made a goal to not spend any money. Within reason of course. I still need to pay rent, buy groceries and will be going to movies with friends, etc.
However I want to stop all of my frivolous spending meaning – no buying more books (I got a TON for Christmas, and bought myself a few beforehand), no new clothes or shoes, no decorations or baking items or tech accessories (phone cases, etc.) not even housewares like candles and mugs, etc.
There are a very grey areas including makeup. I won’t be buying a new eyeshadow palette during the four months but buying a new mascara is totally acceptable. The same goes for anything that breaks – if my phone smashes into a million pieces somehow then I’m allowed to buy a new one.
I received a few gift cards for Christmas and I’m going to go ahead and say that those don’t count.
Why do this?
Now you’re probably wondering why I’m doing this. I plan to put the bulk of the money that I would generally use for spending into savings, but that’s not really the point. I’m a pretty aggressive saver already and put about 1/3 of each pay cheque into savings.
It’s more about just not needing any more STUFF. Every year around late February/early March I start to get really bored with all of my clothes and find reasons to buy more sweaters, outfits, etc. It’s hard when you live in a place where winter seems to drag on and on. The weather gets monotonous, no one wants to go out or do anything because it’s so cold, life seems a bit grimmer.
To brighten my day I’ll often turn to some new purchases. But this is a terrible habit that I’d like to kick. I actually have TONS of clothes for the summer. My closet is packed, my drawers barely close and I just had a closet clean-out recently. Beyond needing more wardrobe space I think it’s time to cut back the spending.
Want to join in? Try something like this Google Sheet (you can view it and copy to make your own here) I have made to track spending and hopefully keep you on pace. The idea is that each week is red until you complete it without spending anything. Then you change it to green and see how many weeks you can survive for.
What are your New Year’s Resolutions? Have you ever tried something like this?
