It’s time to shake things up around here and holy god I’m going to commit myself to a weekly post. So it’s been more than a year of me putting together posts of the best long form each month. It started when I wasn’t particularly happy with the job I was in and reading a lot of long form to make the day seem more bearable.
Since then I have quit my job, and started a new one that I’ve been in for almost a year. But because I like my job and it keeps me busy, reading long form has been relegated to a task I was fitting it on the train, in cars, at home, while walking around. When I put together a list of 15 of the best pieces – I’ve read at least 30 with many that didn’t make the cut. So it takes a big chunk of time.
I’ve started to realize that this format doesn’t fit with my life. And what’s more – by the time I’m putting up the post a lot of these pieces are a month old. In the land of the internet that’s prehistoric.
So instead I’ve decided that I’m going to put together a weekly post of some interesting things from around the web I think you will like. Mostly because I like them.
This will be anything from podcasts to photos to blog posts and YES some long form still. Don’t worry long form articles are still a great love of mine. I’m saying weekly right now, it might be more like biweekly… will keep you posted. But for now you can expect these posts to pop up in your feed on the weekend filled with fun/important/interesting pieces to dive into.
So without further babbling – let’s get into it.
The New York Times Style Magazine put together seven new covers covering interesting artists from all facets. I love Roxane Gay, I think she’s one of the best writers of our time. I flip flop on how I feel about Nicki Minaj put ‘em together and it turns out I like the outcome a lot.
I loved this frank discussion from Hannah Gale on her blog about how she loves her body but hates dressing it. although she’s talking about pregnancy I think this is pretty relatable for lots of women, pregnant or not.
This one is a bit older but I’ve been thinking about this piece in Harper’s Bazar on emotional labour a lot. It’s something I’ve felt for a long time but had trouble putting into words. It’s not just that women tend to more of the labour it’s that when they do it they put the extra emotional work in. A task isn’t just the end result.
To Listen to:
Foster the People’s new album. Well it’s not new, it’s a couple months old actually. But they’re my absolute favourite band, bar none and I got the chance to see them this week for the third time so now this album is even more magical.
Radiolab’s first side project podcast – More Perfect has been my great podcast love recently. It’s about the Supreme Court but if law doesn’t interest you, it’s not dry at all. It’s about the humans behind these court decisions, the plaintiffs and lawyers and judges who have made these decisions, why they happened and the repercussions in their own lives.
Also some of you may not know but I’m a REALLY big Taylor Swift fan. She has put out a playlist filled with songs that are inspiring her and it’s SO good. I’m listening to it as I write this.
My partner and I started watching Netflix’s new crime series Mindhunter. It’s about the FBI agents who discover and coin the term serial killer. It just didn’t exist before that. We’re only on episode 2 because we agreed to watch it together. Since we’re in a long distance relationship this will take us roughly 12 years but I’ll enjoy the time immensely.
CW shows. I’ve always been a sucker for a CW show from Gilmore Girls to Gossip Girl, they always produced my favourites. Now their content licensing deal with Netflix means that each week I get new episodes of Riverdale, Dynasty and Jane the Virgin on Netflix. So I’m happy as a clam.
I woke up on Tuesday morning and had a STRONG craving for scones which I mentioned on my insta story. I wanted savory so after googling around for awhile I went with a classic recipe for cream scones which is so simple and I can confirm are heavenly.
That’s it! That was fun and easy wasn’t it? Let me know what you think of this new format and if you’ll be checking it out each week. As always please leave in the comments what things you’ve been into recently! I’d love to hear and get some inspiration.
