It’s post (Canadian) Thanksgiving so it is time to talk about Halloween! It’s been a crazy year packed to the brim with big movies, TV shows, music and more. Last year I talked about some of the quick, last minute ideas you could try out. But this year I want to give you some very timely ideas to stand out from the crowd at your party, event, school or whatever you’re doing.
Why I picked more girls
Why I stayed away from some of the more obvious ones like Handmaid’s tale
Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do
You didn’t think I was going to let this pass without a reference to Taylor Swift did? Her big return offered so many ideas for costumes. But I think the most fun (and easiest to recreate) would be when she’s robbing a streaming company.
You’ll need: A big black hoodie that doubles as a dress that’s covered in sequins, knee high boots, a bat, and a cat mask.
One of the biggest movies from 2017, you can’t pass this up. Of course she’ll be all over Halloween parties this year but there are a few different Diana looks that you could try out besides the classic unitard.
You’ll need: A trench coat, a bowler hat, a long grey skirt, glasses and a sword or shield.
This was one of my favourite movies to come out this year. And while you can’t really dress up like Ansel Elgort without explaining to people who you are every second, there is a more clever way to do it.
You’ll need: a soother in your mouth, a steering wheel to tape to your stomach, and an Ipod in your ears.
Little Kid from IT
The biggest September release in years, and parties are definitely going to be crawling in Pennywise the clowns this year. I wouldn’t even be surprised if you saw a few groups dressed up as the Losers crew from the movie. But the easiest and most distinct look is definitely the young kid who dies in the beginning.
You’ll need: a little yellow rainjacket, a paper boat, a red balloon
This was a favourite of mine when the first movie came out. It was a movie I spent years convincing people that it was actually good. Then they made a sequel! It’s SO campy and fun and just a complete popcorn flick. So why not put aside James Bond and dress like a modern British spy?
You’ll need: a suit, thick-rimmed black glasses, a stuffed pug. Bonus if it’s a plaid jumpsuit.
Jennifer Lawrence in Mother!
One of the most polarizing movies in years. The whole concept is that Jennifer Lawrence is mother earth so you won’t need too much.
You’ll need: a white slightly see-through maxi dress without a bra, a big thick braid and maybe a fake pregnancy stomach or some blood splashed across your hands.
New girl from Stranger Things
The new Stranger Things season comes out only a few days before Halloween which doesn’t give you much time to pull together an up to date costume. But you can’t show up dressed like one of the boys or Eleven, that’s so 2016. Instead try dressing like the new girl in the season, whose purpose is still very much under wraps.
You’ll need: candy stripe shirt, light wash jeans, red high neck sweater with white strips up the side OR yellow sweater. (I don’t know which is going to be more iconic we’re all guessing here).
Alison Brie from GLOW
I’d call this one a quiet hit. There wasn’t a ton of buzz online about it but everyone I know was watching it and loving it. I think it will definitely stick around it is for sure a distinct look.
You’ll need: a blue unitard, red arm covers, red boots, big hair, blue lipstick, a yellow belt.
