So for a few weeks my brain has been checked into “fall mode”. I’m constantly thinking about thanksgiving, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, a month of scary movies with my besties and of course fall fashion. While it’s getting a bit chillier here it seems like all of my favourite fashion and lifestyle bloggers are still majorly in summer mode.
So every time I look at a new post praying for some fall inspiration I get… more summer.
But I’m looking (and planning) ahead! I want to start buying fall clothes to be prepared for what’s coming (so it doesn’t sneak up on me while I’m still wearing t-shirt dresses). It’s hard to know what the trends are or what the stock of stores might be, so I decided to do some good old fashion scouring. I went in SO many stores a couple of weeks ago with some friends and I’ve been digging through the internet.
Now I’ve picked out my favourite pieces for this fall and what you might want to know about as you dive into your own shopping.
I’m putting this first because I’m very excited about this trend. My cold weather style has always been a bit focused on the fun sweater. I was all about the jeweled neck sweater trend of two years ago (and will continue to be – those sweaters are my favourite). I was walking past the window of an H&M the other day and saw a beautiful cream sweater with black and gold sequins around the neck – done I was sold. I also picked up a sweater from Topshop embroidered with flowers. Done sold. Ready for fall.
The cold-weather friend of the basic tee. I do love a basic tee you can tuck into skirts or just wear with jeans and accessorize to the nines. But in the winter I’m over the t-shirt thing and ready for a cute sweater every day of the week. A basic knit helps with this. I grabbed a pink one from H&M.
It occurred to me recently that I have three purses – a very fancy blue Celine purse that I feel like I have to justify cracking out (I should really use it more), a side-strapped bright pink bag, and a little black purse backpack. None of which scream fall. So I’m on the hunt for a little burgundy bag that’s everything I want and more. Essentially I want the YSL bag but don’t have the YSL budget.
Velvet reigns supreme against this season but I’m noticing people trying it in different ways. After an unfortunate incident where a blue velvet crop top dyed me blue, I’m glad to see the velvet crop top is out. But a velvet bomber jacket? That I can get on board with, let’s not try velvet pants those please.
The military jacket
There’s something about a military jacket that’s just… everything. Free People has a beautiful one but ASOS also carries a few for a bit cheaper. It’s regal and fun, easy to throw over jeans and a white tee and make you look like you’re trying when you didn’t and yet more comfortable than a leather jacket. You can probably get away with wearing it indoors too… I’m sold.
The fall ankle boot
A staple that will never go out of style. I have a black pair I live and die by and a brown pair that’s a bit higher to crack out for occasions… or if I’m feeling extra swish. Maybe it’s time to throw in a little navy as well?
A colour you’ve never tried before
When you think about fall there are probably a few colours that pop into your mind. But I’ve always been one to sticker to the cooler tones, away from the reds and yellows. This is mostly because of hair colour. But recently a friend of mine persuaded me to try red and I loved it. Moral of the story? Try something new this season.
Button Up Front Skirt
I’ve seen this done a few ways, but whether it’s denim or corduroy, the buttons are essential. I think the light brown are a lovely staple to add some fall tones to your wardrobe. However grey and black also capture the trend well but are easier to blend into your wardrobe.
A staple of any season with a bit of a nip in the air. Whether it’s the massive Lenny Kravitz scarves or one a bit more subtle that’s perfect to wear on the plane, you’ll need one. It’s easy to throw on with a light jacket or cuddled up with a fire and making any episode look a bit chicer. Do I sound like an infomercial yet?
What are your fall fashion must-haves? I love suggestions and link so feel free to share them below! On another note I just found out there are massive forms trashing bloggers, have you guys stumbled across those? A conversation for another day, but people are so angry for no reason.
