Hello and welcome back to another addition of what I’ve been loving lately!
To listen to: the two new Bleachers songs “Don’t take the money” and “Hate that you know me” are SO good. I’m so excited for the new album to come out. In the mean time I’ve just been listening to these over and over on repeat. If you’re a fan of Jack Antonoff or his work with Lorde or Taylor Swift you’ll be a fan of these. Also he wrote DTTM with Lorde, so you’ll definitely hear a bit of her in it.
On the podcast front I’ve been feeling a bit meh about lots of podcasts recently. I think lots are just taking a break or have been putting out some duller episodes. Whatever the reason I was in search of something new. That’s when I came across “Make Out With Him”. It’s a dating and love advice podcast by Lex Croucher and Rosianna Rojas where they answer all sorts of love related questions. There’s four episodes, the fourth just came out this week and I love it. They’re fun, light-hearted and all around just lovely. They also occasionally give good advice.
To eat: this is an easy one. The lemon raspberry cookies that I posted about earlier on this week on the blog are basically the best cookies you will ever eat. They’re amazing and trust me you need to double the lemon. As the weather warms up I’m also craving Spanish food. Although when am I not? It’s my favourite cuisine. So I’m going to try and cajole my partner, who’s staying with me in the city this weekend, into going with me to a Spanish restaurant. Wish me luck.
Also with all this talk of warm weather (it’s barely 20C today but a girl can dream that it will stay that way right? Even if the weather reports say differently?) I’m really in the mood for some ice cream.
To drink: for my birthday my friends, my partner and I headed to a restaurant on the west side of the city known as the Drake Hotel for some trivia. It’s honestly not a restaurant I’d recommend on a regular night. The food options are not that exciting and it’s over priced but I love a chance to play trivia. So on Wednesdays I’ve been able to convince three of my friends to head back and compete. Each week we keep getting better.
Anyways my point in all of this is to tell you that one day at trivia I realized they had a Pim’s Cup on the drink menu. Pim’s is typically my summer drink of choice and while it might be only April I’m ready to declare it Pim’s season! If you haven’t had one before it’s a refreshing, citrus and minty drink that you’ll definitely need to try this summer.
To wear: I’ve had some pretty good luck with fashion finds recently. I’ve managed to scoop up two t-shirt dresses from H&M that I’m very much into. Mine are the green and the black & white striped versions.
The other thing I’m really into? Converse. I love my white converse so much. They’re a classic, the only problem is that mine are now very dirty and have a hole in them from me wearing them so much. So I will be on the hunt for a new pair this weekend.
To put on my face: I’m a super pale person. If you’ve seen pictures of me (which are all over my blog) you’re probably surprised by this. So during the winter I wear the lightest shade of Nars All Day Luminous Weightless foundation. It’s shade 001 in case you were wondering. Then in the summer I switch to 002. But in between – which is now – I need something to mix it up. I don’t love mixing foundations together, especially since you put this one on with your hands (the Nars specialist told me to). So I’ve been using my favourite Benefit Hoola Bronzer. I love how buildable this so it doesn’t matter what your skintone you can buy this and it works. But I recommend purchasing a fluffy bronzer brush not using the flat one that it comes with.
To watch: I don’t know if I’ve ever talked about this on my blog before but I’m a HUGE Survivor fan. I have watched every single season since it first came out. And yes it’s still on – you can all stop saying that now. This season has been so much fun to watch with a bunch of my favourites coming back. There was a particularly emotional episode a few weeks ago where a player was outted as being Transgender by another player. It was incredibly hard to watch and I’ve been struggling to put my thoughts into words about it.
So instead I thought I’d let Zeke – the player who was outted – speak for himself. You can check out his article here.
Also really excited about the Handmaid’s Tale. I’ve seen the first two episodes and I’m already obsessed. It is incredibly dark and horrifying yet so beautiful. I can’t really tell you much without spoiling anything so I’m going to say if you’re a fan of Hunger Games crossed with Stranger Things crossed with Game of Thrones with a heavy dash of 1984 then you’ll be interested in this.
To do: It’s baseball season people! Another thing I haven’t mentioned on my blog yet – I’m a big baseball fan. Mostly of the Toronto Blue Jays. I’ve been watching a fan for about eight years now thanks to my friend from high school. I live really close to the stadium so I can’t wait to go to games this year.
My partner has never been to a game since we’ve only been dating for two baseball seasons and we lived in Ottawa and the New Brunswick during them. I’m excited to drag him to a game… maybe even this weekend.
To read: I started reading One Day We’ll All Be Dead And None Of This Will Matter by Scaachi Khoul and I LOVE it. Then I made a dumb mistake and left it at my mom’s house where I was for Easter weekend.
So I’ve been reading this book called The Break by Katherena Vermette. If you’re from Canada you probably know about the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women. If not, it’s a very complex issue and I can’t really sum it up as well as these women and families can themselves. Some of their stories can be found here. There is a crime at the beginning of the book that one character sees but you don’t really know what happened. Then the days leading up to it are told from the perspective of several different indigenous women in the community.
It’s compelling to read a narrative like this that gives these women the power to tell their own stories. Even if it is fiction. The book has also won a bunch of awards. I’m not quite finished yet but so far I’m a big fan.
What have you been loving lately? Are there any recommendations you have for me that I should check out?
