I’ve toyed a lot since I started my blog with trying to find the perfect balance between talking about myself without giving too many personal details. It’s hard.
Recently, I was asked why I don’t write about my personal life and the answer is – it’s complicated.
There are so many thing I just don’t want to share. Triumphs and tribulations that my family and friends go through are not fodder for my blog. It’s just so unnecessary for me to share the bulk of that.
I truly believe you can be a good writer without sharing your personal life. One of my favourite writers – Rachel Syme – once pointed out that you shouldn’t trust an editor who will only look at your personal essays and not your other works. I feel that way about my blog.
If you’re here only to read the juicy details about my life – be it my chronic pain, relationship, friends or family then you should probably stop reading my blog.
Occasionally I will share bits of my life of course! And I love lots of bloggers that that’s what they do. But I’m also protective over the people I’m sharing details about. My partner is in law school right now and he can’t go through that or his career publicly. He share very little online, with a private instagram and no other social media. I try to respect that with how it extends to my blog.
Although he is incredibly kind and doesn’t mind me including a few bits, I try not to use his name or share any personal details. He crops up here and there because he’s in my life. But I’m not going to share many details.
Honestly, my personal posts are not my most read, so I know the majority of people who read my blog don’t care about any of this.
This blog is now and will always be about my hobbies. I like to bake, travel, read, write, talk about clothes, makeup and skincare and I love all holidays. That’s what this blog is about and will continue to be about. The personal posts are small blips when I feel like I need to get something off my chest – like this.
So thank you to everyone who shows up not because they want a spectacle but because they care about the other stuff. Maybe one day I’ll write a memoir and then you can read all of my juicy secrets. But at least that way I’ll be getting paid.
