Before I start I have to give credit for this post to one of my favourite bloggers, Chelsea, she’s great and you should definitely check her out. I saw her post about spring cleaning your life and I immediately knew that I wanted to do one as well. Also she got the idea from Lindsay, so just a lot of bloggers sharing ideas here.
I’m not big on actual cleaning, before you freak out my apartment is clean and I do what I can to keep it that way but I really don’t revel in the task of cleaning. I enjoy clean sheets and all my surfaces to be cleaned off but other than that it’s just a chore.
However, there are some ways that I don’t mind cleaning up, and that’s cleaning up my life. Every so often it’s good to check in with yourself and complete some tasks that will just make you feel a bit more put together. So here’s my list and feel free to add your own in the comments!
Cleaning up your social media
My partner and I were talking recently about how easy it is to find out a lot about people online. I know that I’m fairly open and out there, maybe more than most, when it comes to sharing online but I do like to keep some things private. One of those things is my Facebook. I go through my Facebook every couple of months and make sure that my privacy settings are very locked down and I delete old posts.
I also recently went through my Instagram and deleted a bunch of posts in the hopes of getting a more cohesive feed. It’s going to take some work but I think it’s getting there.
Clean out your cracker cupboard
Okay, I know it’s not called a cracker cupboard but you know that drawer or cupboard in your house filled with boxes of crackers and snacks? Most of which are half empty? Clean it out. Those do go stale and you don’t need all of them.
Get rid of small monthly charges you don’t need
I don’t have too many automatic payments set up but I started looking at my recently and deciding what I needed and what I didn’t to save some money here and there. You know what I didn’t need? To be paying for my old blog hosting since my blog has shifted over to wordpress. So I cancelled that.
Take a look at what your monthly charges are and try to get rid of a few little ones.
This is a big one, and Chelsea talked about this as well. Not only is it time to unsubscribe from all those email lists you’re on but it’s also time to start going through and deleting old emails. You don’t need thousands of them, and you know what they say – clear mailbox, clear head. Well actually no one says that but now I do.
Close tabs you’ve had open forever
I’m so guilty of this. Opening a ton of tabs or even browser windows and leaving them open forever because maybe I’ll read that article later. No. Either read it now or close it. This goes for your phone too. Close all of those apps you still have open for the love of god.
Donate clothes you never wear
Years ago I learned the technique where you take all of the hangers in your closet and flip them backwards. Then when you wear an item you flip the hanger the regular way around. After a couple of weeks you’ll start to notice all of those items you “love” so much but never wear. Give those to your friends, donate them to charity, whatever just ditch them.
Delete old photos
Go through your iphone, your iphoto, your computer, whatever and delete old photos. I have thousands just eating up space on my computer because I always just dump all of them and then forget about it. Delete them, then empty your computer’s trash.
30 Day text delete
There’s this wonderful feature on your phone where you can set it to delete texts after 30 days. Do that. You don’t need texts from longer ago than that, trust me. You feel like you do but you really don’t. And if you really need one message – screenshot it.
This is pretty self explanatory. It will clear up lots of space. I recently deleted a bunch of apps off my phone and it only saved me about 300mb of space but I obviously didn’t need them so what’s the point?
Maybe stop talking to that one person
You know that one person in your life who annoys you or you just know talking to them causes drama or it makes you angry every time you do. Just stop answering their texts, stop hanging out with them, move on. We all have that one person taking up space in our minds, our phones, our friends’ minds when we talk about it all the time – just stop the madness.
Go through that stack of important papers
I don’t know about you but I always have a stack of important papers on my desk. Things I need to go through, or shred or prescriptions I haven’t gotten filled. Go through that stack – fill your prescriptions, cash those cheques, shred those papers, mail those letters and just get on with it. A clean desk is the best way to have a clear head I always think.
I’m going to spend my weekend being totally disconnected from social media, but I’ll have some really great content when I reconnect with the world so feel free to follow any of my accounts and let me know what you’re doing with your weekend. Also let me know how you’re going to spring clean your life.
